 Professor Hew Strachan Chichele Professor of the History of War All Souls College
| Hew Strachan was born and brought up in Edinburgh. He is Chichele Professor of the History of War at the University of Oxford, Fellow of All Souls College, and Director of the Leverhulme Programme on the Changing Character of War. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh 2003 and awarded an Hon. D.Univ., (Paisley) 2005. He is also Life Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he was successively Research Fellow, Admissions Tutor and Senior Tutor, 1975-92. From 1992 to 2001 he was Professor of Modern History at the University of Glasgow, and from 1996 to 2001 Director of the Scottish Centre for War Studies. His books include: European Armies and the Conduct of War (1983), Wellington’s Legacy: the Reform of the British Army 1830-54(1984), From Waterloo to Balaclava: Tactics, Technology and the British Army 1815-1854 (1985); awarded the Templer Medal), The Politics of the British Army (1997; awarded the Westminster Medal), the first volume of his three-volume, The First World War (To Arms), (2001); awarded two American military history prizes and nominated for the Glenfiddich Scottish book of the year), and The First World War: A New Illustrated History (2003); published to accompany the 10-part Wark Clements television series for Channel 4, nominated for a British Book Award and translated into German, Italian, Dutch, Spanish and French). He is joint editor of the journal War in History and was editor of The Oxford Illustrated History of the First World War (1998) and The British Army, Manpower and Society into the 21st Century (2000)

President David Blagden DPhil Candidate Contact: University College, Oxford, OX1 4BH president @oussg.org | David Blagden grew up in Derbyshire. He holds an MA (Distinction) in International Relations from the University of Chicago, where he was a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar, and previously read Philosophy, Politics and Economics as an undergraduate at Oxford. He is currently an ESRC-funded DPhil candidate in International Relations at University College; his research focuses on the relationship between economic globalization and the rise of great powers, IR theory and security studies more broadly, and British defence policy. Prior to his doctoral study, he worked as a Central and Eastern Europe analyst at Business Monitor International, a London-based political and economic risk advisory firm. He was the 2009 winner of the Trench Gascoigne Essay Prize, awarded by the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI), and his publications have appeared in International Affairs, the RUSI Journal, and the Yale Journal of International Affairs. He is also the general section editor of the peer-reviewed academic journal, St Antony’s International Review, and was OUSSG Treasurer in academic year 2005-6. |
Vice President | Sam Kleiner MPhil Candidate Contact: St Antony's College, Oxford, OX2 6JF vice.president @oussg.org | Sam Kleiner is an MPhil candidate in International Relations at St Antony's College. Originally from Tucson, Arizona in the United States, he holds a BA in Political Science and American Studies from Northwestern University. He was awarded a Marshall Scholarship for his studies at Oxford where his research focuses on US foreign policy, international organizations and international law. He has done work for the US State Department and the American Enterprise Institute and held fellowships from the Center for the Study of the Presidency and the Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship. He has delivered lectures at institutions including the University of Ulster, the University of Durham and the University of Birmingham. |

Evert Faber van der Meulen MPhil Candidate
Contact: Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, OX2 6QA secretary @oussg.org | Evert Faber van der Meulen grew up in Dordrecht, the Netherlands. He holds a BA in History and an MA (Distinction) in European Union Studies from Leiden University. He has done work for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was a junior lecturer on EU External Relations at Leiden University from 2007 to 2009, publishing mainly on EU external energy policy and EU-Russian gas relations. He is currently reading for an MPhil in Islamic Studies and History at Lady Margaret Hall as a Huygens Scholarship recipient. His research focuses on the relations between 11th century Islamic legal definitions of common property and present-day issues relating to common property (such as resource extraction and climate change) in Islamic countries.

Mark Scott BA candidate
Contact: Mansfield College, Oxford, OX1 3TF treasurer @oussg.org | Formerly of Leeds Grammar School, Mark Scott is currently a BA candidate in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, focusing on International Relations; his thesis research looks at the influence of the religious Right on foreign policy-making in the United States. He has worked as a researcher in the House of Commons, and in addition to his work on the OUSSG committee, he will serve as the President of the Oxford Society of Bibliophiles in Michaelmas Term 2010.
